Fergus, Ontario

Fergus sits on the Grand River in Wellington County, about 41 minutes from Hammer Haus — close enough for a relaxed morning start and far enough to feel like a proper day out.

The town was founded in 1833 by Scottish settlers, and that heritage is still visible in the limestone buildings lining St. Andrew Street. The Grand River runs right through the centre, and the weir at the old mill is one of the most photographed spots in the region.

• St. Andrew Street — The main strip is lined with independent shops, cafés, and restaurants housed in 19th-century stone buildings. Good for a slow browse.
• The Grand River Weir — The wide curtain of water below the old Fergus Mill is worth the walk down to the riverbank. Bring a camera.
• Fergus Market — A year-round indoor market with local produce, baked goods, and artisan vendors. Saturday mornings are the busiest and the best.
• Elora Gorge — Just 5 minutes further up the road, the gorge is a dramatic limestone canyon worth adding to the day. Swimming, tubing, and hiking trails are all on offer.
• The Fergus Scottish Festival — Held each August, it's one of the largest Highland Games in North America. If your visit lines up, don't miss it.
• Elora — The neighbouring village is a 5-minute drive and has its own character: galleries, the Elora Gorge, and a handful of good places to eat.

Plan to arrive mid-morning, walk the main street, have lunch by the river, and take the short drive to Elora before heading back. It's an easy, satisfying day from Waterloo.
