Stratford
A proper theatre town on the Avon River, about an hour from Hammer Haus. Stratford is best known for the Stratford Festival — one of the largest classical repertory theatre companies in North America — but the town itself is worth the drive even if you're not catching a show. Good restaurants, independent shops, and a river running right through the middle of it.
The Festival
The Stratford Festival runs from April through November across four stages: the Festival Theatre, the Avon Theatre, the Tom Patterson Theatre, and the Studio Theatre. The season mixes Shakespeare with contemporary plays and musicals. Tickets sell out early for the popular productions, so book ahead at stratfordfestival.ca. If you're flexible on what you see, same-day rush tickets are often available at the box office.
The River & Parks
The Avon River winds through the centre of town with parks and walking paths along both banks. The Shakespearean Gardens are worth a stop — a formal English garden with a bust of Shakespeare and flower beds that peak in summer. Swans on the river are a Stratford fixture; you'll see them from most of the bridges. The trestle bridge and Huron St. Bridge are both good spots to linger.
Downtown
Ontario Street and the surrounding blocks have a strong independent retail scene — bookshops, galleries, clothing boutiques, and kitchen stores in well-kept Victorian buildings. Gallery Stratford on Romeo Street shows Canadian and Indigenous art and is free to enter. The Windsor Hotel is a local landmark worth a look even if you're not staying.
Eating & Drinking
The restaurant scene punches well above the town's size. Plenty of options within walking distance of the theatres, from casual cafes to proper sit-down dinners. Book ahead on show nights — the whole town fills up between performances.
Getting There
About 90 km from Hammer Haus — roughly an hour by car through Perth County. Plan a full day: a matinee, a walk along the river, dinner before the evening show if you're staying for two.
